Graduation in any stream form a recognized university, aspirants in final year of graduation are also eligible for the exam .

EXAMINATION PATTERN

The exam comprises of three stages.
  • Civil services preliminary examination
  • Civil services Mains Examination
  • Personality test

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

The Civil Services preliminary exam comprise of two compulsory papers of two hours duration each carrying 200 marks.
General Study Paper1: This is GS based paper tests candidate knowledge on the following subjects.
  • Current events of national and international importance.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.
  • General Science

GENERAL STUDY PAPER-2

This paper check for candidates skill in analytical ability, decision making, problem solving, basic numeracy, data interpretation, comprehension, communication, English language and mental ability. This paper is qualifying in nature, a candidate has to score minimum 33% ie 66 marks out of 200. The marks of this paper is not counted while preparing the cut-off marks for prelim .

MAINS EXAMINATIONS

The upsc civil services mains examination consist of the nine papers out of which 7 papers are counted in merit preparation and two papers ( Paper-A and Paper-B are qualifying):Qualifying :
  • Paper- A (One of the Indian Language to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution). 300 Marks ( Qualifying in Nature)
  • Paper- B English 300 ( Qualifying in Nature)

  • Paper-II : General Studies-I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society) 250 Marks

  • Paper-IV : General Studies -III (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) 250 Marks

  • Paper-VI Optional Subject – Paper 1 250 Marks
  • Paper-VII Optional Subject – Paper 2 250 Marks

UPSC INTERVIEW

The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a track record of his/her career. He/she will be asked questions on general subjects. The purpose of the interview is to examine the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in civil service

The UPSC interview is intended to evaluate the intellectual calibre of a candidate. In broad terms this is truly an evaluation of not only his/her intellectual qualities but also social characteristics and his/her awareness about current affairs. Some of the qualities to be examined are mental alertness, balance in judgement, clear and logical explanation, variety and depth of interest, capability for social cohesion.

The method of the UPSC interview is not that of a rigorous cross-examination but of a natural, though aimed and purposive dialogue which is intended to disclose the mental qualities of the candidate. The interview is not meant to be an examination either of the specialized or general knowledge of the candidates which has been already examined through their written papers. Candidates are expected to take a logical approach not only in their special subjects of academic study but also in the events which are happening around them both within and outside their own state or country
